Magdalena Ufholz (Nee Weissbarth)
Our hearts are broken! It is with great sorrow we announce Magdalena’s passing on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. She was in her 86Th year. She was a loving wife to her husband Lorenz, nurturing mother to Joe (Susan) and Irene, and doting Oma to Kristan and Stefani. She was Aunt to Ed (Carol) and Bill (Maureen) Bissinger. Magdalena was predeceased by her parents, Josef and Katherina Weissbarth and her sister Eva Bissinger (Adam). We are comforted by the knowledge that after so many years they are together again as a family. Magdalena was born in Weprowatz, Jugoslavia on November 11, 1932. As with many others, she and Lorenz suffered persecution and adversity. They met each other during this difficult time. She married Lorenz in 1950. They risked everything to escape and eventually immigrated to Canada in 1957 along with her parents to start a new and better life here. For that sacrifice and decision, we are truly grateful. From 1966 to 1979, Magdalena and Lorenz built 2 homes and a cottage from scratch. That was the beginning of a life of creativity, accomplishment and success. Her greatest joy was family and she lived for large family gatherings. It only took a visit from her grandchildren to bring a bright glow to her eyes, a smile to her face and a joyous welcoming hug. She was an avid and accomplished cook and produced feasts appropriate for the occasion. It was next to impossible to leave with any loose clothing. She loved to bake and created extraordinary and delicious cakes and pastries whenever the opportunity presented itself. It’s our belief that she got kickbacks from our dentist! Magdalena excelled at sewing and knitting and made indistinguishable copies of fashionwear as it suited her needs. She had hundreds of Burda pattern magazines to help satisfy her need to be challenged to create yet another success, be it suit, skirt, pants or blouse. Any alteration was just a few moments away. She loved to garden, whether it was flowers, vegetable or fruits. She had plenty of help from our Labrador retriever, Blackie, who stayed by her side while she gardened. Her roses stood proud when she walked by and they were the envy of the neighbourhood. She experimented with her garden bounty and there were few failures. Her jams and preserves were irresistible. Magdalena and Lorenz loved a good polka or waltz and enjoyed their time with family and friends at the Donau Schwaben Club. She was involved with the women’s auxiliary at the club and looked forward to the member meetings. This resulted in many lifelong friendships. She understood the meaning of hard work, thrift, love, sharing and compassion. She also knew what fun and a good time meant.
She will be forever in our broken hearts. We have fond memories that we will always cherish. Thank you for everything you have given us and your friends during your precious time as mother, Oma, friend and companion. The family thanks Markham-Stouffville Hospital, and especially Drs. Borgono and Li and the caring nurses and staff who attended to her needs. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the hospital.
The family will receive friends at the Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home 211 Langstaff Road East (west of Bayview Ave.) from 11 – 1:15 pm on Thursday August 23, 2018. A mass of Christian burial will take place within the funeral home in the Chapel of St. Joseph on Thursday at 1:30 pm. The final rite of committal and interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery (8361 Yonge Street Thornhill). Online condolences & directions may be found at www.catholic-cemeteries.com
