elevated lTML9 Obituary

elevated lTML9 Sung- Hoi Cheng of Markham, Canada and of Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hour of Saturday, January 8, 2022 at age 103, one month shy of his 104 birthday in February. Loving husband of Shui- Ching Siu, he is survived by his devoted children Wai- Lan Viola Cheng and Wai-Ming William Cheng. He was predeceased by his other daughter Wai- Hei Sabrina Cheng. He was very much loved and admired by his many nieces and nephews.

elevated lTML9 A self-made man, Sung Hoi hailed from Fuchow, China and moved to Shanghai in his teens where he worked for the legendary Peace Hotel and where he learned English and Shanghainese. In his twenties, he joined the merchant marine and travelled the world many times over while accumulated at the time a small fortune. After the Communist took over China, Sung- Hoi moved to Hong Kong where by chance he spotted his future wife and her sisters eating at a restaurant. He decided to pursue her and asked the restaurant owner who knew his wife’s father for the introduction. Several months of courtship ensued and they became engaged and were married a year later. A Jewish co-worker whom he befriended at the Peace Hotel had immigrated to the U.S. during the regime change in China and who later became a wealthy business man in N.Y. offered to sponsor his old friend to come to N.Y. Sung- Hoi then immigrated to N.Y. in the 70’s where for a while he worked and operated a restaurant.

elevated lTML9 Sung Hoi was a kind and generous man, he was a connoisseur of fine food, a good cook, an amateur photographer and a dapper dresser. He strived to wear the finest clothing and to look his best up until early last year when he had to be placed in a care facility. In his early years, he collected music albums from the early rock and roll era and Motown from artists such as Nat King Cole, the Platters and the Four Tops which at the time was a rarity among the Chinese even in Hong Kong. In his later years, he became a collector of fine jewelleries and jade carvings many of which he gave to his children and to his nieces.

elevated lTML9 Arrangements are entrusted to Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home and Cemetery, 211 Langstaff Road E, Thornhill, where friends may pay their respects from 10am until 12 noon. A graveside funeral service will follow on the on-site cemetery grounds at 12 noon.
