After a long strong battle, Lina passed away peacefully on August 3, 2022 with Eliseo Leo by her side. Born on October 21, 1925, Lena was the eldest child of Giuseppina and Salvatore Marchese who had seven children: Calargero, Lina, Vincenzo, Carmelo, Salvatore, Giuseppe and Marianna. The family lived in Racalmuto Sicily, then in 1960 immigrated to Canada. Lena married Silvio Mitterni in 1967, in Toronto, becoming mother to Leo and building with him an amazing bond that grew stronger even till this day. Lina, you filled a very big void in my life. Today that void is present again, but in time, the life-long memories will flood in to fill that void again. The life lessons, the humor, the perfectionist qualities that you showed in all you did—especially baking and sewing, will stay with us forever. We will always strive to emulate your inquisitive mind—always willing to learn, but also to teach and to retain so much. Thank for the joy, the love, and the wisdom you gave us. You will be sorely missed. Sempre Eliseo.
Lena is survived by her brother Salvatore; brother and sister in law Giuseppe & Rita Marchese; and beloved nieces and nephews. Thank you for all your support Linda, Josie, Mary, Martin, Emilia, Daliah, Caley and many others. A special thank you to the nurses and doctors at Toronto Grace and the SRT PSW’s for their skill and caring especially Celia and Yasmin.

Visiting with Lena and Leo was always the highlight of my return to Toronto. Great food, laughter and love would always be found there. Lena would bake me the delicious yellow cake offering it along with a big smile. I will miss her dearly! Rest In Peace Lena and know that you were and always will be deeply loved.❤️😘🙏
I am so grateful for Zia Lina bringing so much joy and love into my life. My cheeks would hurt from smiling after a chat with the Queen of Sicily, but the smile would continue. Zia Lina taught Linda to make me fresh pasta and pizza, and taught her practical life lessons that Linda often quotes. Her lessons, and Leo’s guidance and advice, have been invaluable in our lives. I am so grateful to Leo for the example he sets for all of us, and for the touchstone he is for my wife. His care for Zia Lina is inspiring. Linda lit up every time she spoke with Zia Lina, even if it was the third time in a week. I am grateful because Zia Lina, with her elegant charm and spirited voice, was bringing that love and joy into MY home through Linda, allowing us to further spread the love to others. She truly made the world a better place and will be dearly missed. Thank you for everything Leo. Rest In Peace, Zia Lina.
Lena you’re love will Always be remembered! God has opened the grates of Heaven for a Wonderful”person”Lena🙏 Love ❤️ You!!
Dear Aunt Lena,
Last week brought me much sadness and joy. I was saddened when I heard that you had left us. Then several days later I was blessed with the birth of my granddaughter Montserrat. I hope that she grows up to be as strong as you. Some of the memories I have were visiting with you on our trips to Toronto, sharing the same birthday and watching you put my Father in his place. Though I will not be there in person I will be watching via live stream. Thank you Eliseo for taking great care of our Aunt.
Mia cara Zia riposi in pace
