elevated ii3sQ Obituary
David Tupchong, beloved husband of Chen, father of 6 children -Leslie (Mimi), Michael (Maureen), Yvonne (Mel), Sheryll (Alex), Karen (Patrick), Gary (Hilda), grandfather of 14 grandchildren ( Bryan, Alistair, Andrea,Adrian, Keegan, Benita, Jeffrey, Megan, Genevieve, Alisha, Lauren, Sarah, Brandon, Connor), great-grandfather to 6 great-grandchildren (James, Evan, Emily, Audrey, Claire, Alice) passed away peacefully on December 19th, 2023 after a long debilitating illness. In his dying moments, he was surrounded by his family with a Catholic priest in attendance. He was 96 years old.
elevated ii3sQ He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Chen and his younger siblings, Freda and Nora. He was predeceased by his other siblings, including Stanley, Phyllis, Edward, Sunderson, Doris, Singfor, Gordon.
elevated ii3sQ David was born on 3rd May, 1927, the 7th of 10 children in East London, South Africa. He grew up during the time of the Great Depression in the 1930s under the apartheid regime then in place, which greatly affected him.
elevated ii3sQ In 1948, when just shy of his 21st birthday. he married 17 year old Chen. Within 4 years, they had 3 children, followed by 3 others later.
elevated ii3sQ As a young man, David was energetic, vibrant, and entrepreneurial and was able to secure a solid middle class upbringing for his children, running a flourishing corner-shop business. He worked virtually incessantly and the family never took a vacation.
elevated ii3sQ In early 1982, he sold his business and emigrated to Canada, first settling in Vancouver before relocating to the Toronto area..
elevated ii3sQ Together with his wife, his joy was in his children and grand-children. He took pride in their achievements and successes. He placed a high priority on education and, by his example, he imparted a solid work ethic and discipline. Many of the grandchildren have pursued professional careers, specifically in healthcare and law.
elevated ii3sQ In his teens, he played the drums in a band. He was particularly keen on business, finance and the stock market. He followed current events avidly and would read newspapers online from several countries. His favorite extramural activity was MahJong, the Casino and Horse-racing.
elevated ii3sQ He converted to Roman Catholicism when he underwent emergency abdominal surgery in his 20’s. As a devout Catholic, he attended Mass without fail every Sunday until he was physically unable to do so, then resorting to You-tube or radio broadcasts.
elevated ii3sQ He enjoyed good health and many years of happy retirement until his late 80’s. The Covid epidemic marked a distinct deterioration in his overall physical condition. While living in an Assisted Living facility, he contracted Covid and was admitted to hospital where he spent several weeks and was never able to walk again. His neurological problems rapidly progressed and he required considerable care in a Long-term Care Home. Several times, he was admitted to hospital gravely ill and he received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick at least three times, each time almost miraculously making a recovery to be able to leave hospital, except for his final illness. Through all this time, he bore his Cross with courage and dignity, and fought valiantly to the end.

My name is George Shaw and I live in Johannesburg. I am 85. I was born at 70 St James Road, East London, in Jan 1939, literally a stones throw from the Tupchong general store at the corner of St James and Gordon Roads. I was one of 4 children. We bought all our groceries from Tupchongs and my mother would send me there virtually every day to buy something. That was long before the advent of supermarkets. If we wanted a pound of sugar it was poured into a brown paper bag and measured on a self balancing scale. I don’t recall David. I remember Freda and Gordon Tupchong.
