elevated ve1VO Obituary

elevated ve1VO Carlos DeSousa, 92, of Toronto, ON, passed away on January 14, 2024. Carlos was born on August 26, 1931, to Manuel and Rosa DeSousa in Arrifes, Azores, Portugal.

elevated ve1VO Carlos was a mere teenager when he began his career as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He served under master carpenters and, in quick time, became a master himself. In the early years, he was fond of designing and building toys for his children and furniture for their home. He took on many jobs in his professional career but was most proud of his role in building and installing the elaborate bar at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. As a grandfather, he was most proud of designing and building one-of-a-kind stools and trays for his grandchildren, each with intricate, muti-coloured, wood inlays.

elevated ve1VO Carlos married his wife of 66 years, Liliana, on December 15, 1957. Together, they raised two children – Manny and Carlos. He would speak with tremendous pride that one became a renowned photographer and the other a teacher and administrator. Their successes validated the courageous decision in 1965 to leave Portugal and come to Toronto in search of a brighter future for his family.

elevated ve1VO His grandchildren describe him as calm, quiet and funny. He was someone who was always sweet and kind to them and others. And they know him as a true master of his craft. They appreciated that he was genuinely happy for their successes and those of everyone he knew. He was a positive role model and leaves a powerful legacy of compassion, courage and creativity.

elevated ve1VO Carlos was predeceased by his son, Manny, and his siblings Deulinda, Jaime, and Natalia. He is survived by his wife, Liliana, his son Carlos, his grandchildren Adam, Katherine and Joshua, and his siblings Joao, Dinarte, Louis and Jose.

elevated ve1VO In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to an Alzheimer’s, Diabetes or Cancer society of your choice, or any organization that you would like to support.
