elevated DpbYM It is with sadness that we announce that our dear mother Marcheta passed away in Toronto with family by her side at the age of 95. She was born in Calcutta, India to Eugene Francis Duncan and Claire (nee De la Bat). Along with her sisters, Marina & Gloria, she attended Loreto House School in Calcutta and fondly remembered her years there and education by the nuns and kept in touch with some of them even after she moved to Canada.
elevated DpbYM Her older brother, Eugene’s, St. Xavier’s college friend, Kenneth Gaughan, eventually became her husband in 1949. Before that, during the war years, she volunteered with the Red Cross to help released Allied POWs and wounded soldiers read and write their letters home.
elevated DpbYM She was an astute and amazing secretary excelling in shorthand and 90 words per minute typing. Her work resumé included: Burma Oil in India, Pre Con in Toronto and finally as administration assistant to the head of the French Immersion Program in the Ontario Govt. She retired early to enjoy life with Kenneth in their love of travel and watch sunsets by the seaside – her favourite vista! Marcheta mastered the art of cooking for a crowd and you always knew you would be fed even unannounced at her house. She loved the ballet, theatre and symphony and encouraged her family to do the same.
elevated DpbYM Marcheta is predeceased by her beloved husband Kenneth (passed in 2018), brother Eugene Duncan, sister Marina (Loan), sister-in-law Sybill (nee Alexander) and brothers-in-law Leslie & Patrick Conway and sadly by her great-grandchild, Mateo Sarmiento.
elevated DpbYM She is survived by her sister Gloria (Conway), brother-in-law George Loan, sister-in-law Blossom (Conway) and her children Linda Gaughan, Marina Elms (and Paul Klingborg), Ken Peter (and Laurie) Gaughan, and Suzanne (and Ronald) Wales; her four grandchildren Ryland Elms (and fiancée Paula Martinez), Martin Wales (and Elishia Porter), Mary-Claire (and Melissa) Sarmiento, and Julia (and Loa) Ngaue; and her precious great-grandchildren Darius and Addison Wales, Marley, Naomi & Kalani Ngaue (and their cousin Vai), and Mila Sarmiento
elevated DpbYM The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff of Bayview Extendicare for all of their care and unfailing kindness as well to the wonderful staff at her prior senior’s retirement home– Delmanor Northtown (2016-2023). The family is also extremely grateful and ever thankful for the untiring help, assistance and caring given by her caregiver, who became a friend, Luzviminda (Minda) Gariando in the last two years of Marcheta’s life.
elevated DpbYM In memory of our mother and in lieu of flowers, if you wish, please consider a donation to the Canadian Red Cross or The Good Shepherd Ministries.

Thank you for sharing your mom and dad with us.
Your mom and I were friends for over 60 years and she always referred to me as her first Canadian friend and your father walked me down the aisle on our wedding day.
God bless you all
