It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Esther who left us peacefully on October 21, 2024 at the age of 98 years after a lengthy battle with cancer.

elevated Uy0nw Esther was the beloved wife of the late Percy, and only daughter of the late Albert Jarvis and Susetta Seager.  She was the cherished sister of Fred Jarvis and the late Frank Jarvis.

elevated Uy0nw Esther was the dear mother of six children, William (Rosilyn and the late Marilyn), Robert (the late Eleanor), Carol (Hector), Linda (Joe), Richard (Susan) and the late David (Nancy). She was also the beloved grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  Esther was the dear friend of Lidia and Ted Gwozdz, and of Afa May, Maria, Margaret, Milberg and many others from Delmanor Elgin Mills Retirement Home.

elevated Uy0nw Esther was born in the small town of Castlederg near Bolton, Ontario.  Her father’s work led the family to frequent moves.  Along the way, she met her husband Percy and they married in October 1941.  Esther and Percy raised six children as they made homes in Collingwood, Richmond Hill, Toronto and finally settling in Scarborough in 1962.  When money was short in the 1970s, Esther took a job at the Laura Secord chocolate factory working on the assembly line.  When Percy passed in 1983, Esther remained in the family home until 2007 when she moved to an apartment in Richmond Hill and later to Delmanor Elgin Mills in 2019.

elevated Uy0nw Esther was a tireless caregiver, nursing each of husband Percy, son David and mother Susetta in their final years.  She was the “Card Lady” who never missed sending a birthday, anniversary or holiday card until her health prevented her from doing so. She loved to shop, and a new “Bay Days” flyer was always something that brought her excitement.  Esther also enjoyed reading murder mystery novels and the occasional romance story with a cup of Chamomile tea, and her favourite song was “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion.  An avid gardener, Esther always seemed to have one of the most colourful and vibrant flower gardens in Scarborough.  Babysitting and playing with her grandchildren, and attending their sports games and piano, guitar and dance recitals, were some of her favourite past-times.  Always a lady, she never showed up for dinner at someone’s home without having baked a cake or chocolate brownies, or without having made fresh Rice Krispie squares or a pumpkin pie for dessert.

elevated Uy0nw In her later years, macular degeneration took Esther’s eye-sight and left her blind for many years.  However, she rose to the challenge and sharpened her other senses to compensate.  With the help and care of her trusted friend and companion Lidia for many years, Esther developed several strategies for managing daily chores and meals and maintaining independent living.  She never let her vision loss stop her from doing fitness programs, enjoying audiobooks or going on shopping trips with Lidia. Esther was a strong lady with a brave heart and a gentle soul who never gave up, and she managed to beat Covid on three separate occasions.

elevated Uy0nw Many thanks to Dr. Habib and all of the compassionate and caring nurses, personal support workers, dining servers, concierge staff, Living Well staff and the entire team at Delmanor Elgin Mills for making Esther a member of your family and taking such good care of Esther in her final weeks.
