I have so many fond memories of Carlo. When I was a boy, cousin Frank and I sold products for him door to door in apartment buildings (some places I wouldn’t want to enter now as an adult). Have you ever purchased a ratchet set from a snot-nosed little kid at your door? Well some did. From us. That’s the spirit of enterprising entrepreneurialism and salesmanship I learned about from Carlo. I will always remember my sleep over at Zia Irma’s and Zio Pietro’s house circa the summer of 1980 when I spent time with Carlo and his friends. He let me sit in on some of his band’s jamb sessions. It was great. My favourite job as a young teenager was working at Carlo’s Sunoco gas bar at Jane and Wilson with cousin Frank, Frank’s cousin Joe, and our friend Carlo Corbo, back when gas was about 36 cents per litre. We were the real motley crew. We had a blast but we also worked hard. The customers loved us. I think we even went on a “wildcat strike” once to demand higher wages and Carlo, always the smart businessman, met our demands. He knew we sometimes horsed around (is playing football with cans of oil horsing around?), but he usually looked the other way. I will always remember the great conversations he and I had on politics and economics (whether we agreed or not). I’m so saddened that Carlo was taken from us so soon before his time. I will miss him.
