elevated 7IMjD We are heartbroken to announce that Mary Margaret Eileen “Chickie” O’Connell Smith passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025 at 1:00 am at Hill House Hospice in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

elevated 7IMjD Effervescent Eileen was born on January 22, 1944 to Molly Maher and Arthur O’Connell at the Jeffery Hale Hospital in Quebec City, Quebec. She grew up in NDG in Montreal and later lived in Toronto, London, Pickering and Markham, Ontario. She had three siblings, Luanne O’Connell Griffin (late Peter), Richard O’Connell (Kathy) and Christine O’Connell Cosman (Jim) and had many beloved nieces and nephews. She had countless aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Family was important to her and she enjoyed travelling with her siblings as they set out on many adventures, discovering more about their cherished ancestors.

elevated 7IMjD Eileen married Gary Frederick Smith on August 21, 1965. They had two children, Marnie Smith and Danny Smith. She was a best friend and a comforting confidante for her children, always.

elevated 7IMjD During her joyful life, Eileen’s favorite job was working as a copy editor at The Bay News newspaper in Pickering, Ontario. She made many friends there and maintained their close connections throughout her life.

elevated 7IMjD Eileen loved to sing and dance and listen to music. She loved watching sports and detective TV shows. She loved reading historical fiction and mystery novels. She had an infectious laugh and a beautiful, big smile. She loved to tell humorous anecdotes and listen to other people’s funny tales. She was a proud Canadian and loved Ireland as well. Her family meant everything to her.
