Gaby Matar passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2023 at 10:50 am surrounded by his loving family at the Credit Valley Hospital, at the age of 92. Dad was a great family man, loving husband to his wife Leila, a wonderful father to Rula, Carole (Sari) and Khalid (Melissa). He adored his 5 grandchildren and took pleasure in lovingly watching them grow up. Gaby will be remembered for his witty sense of humour, street smarts, quiet gaze, extreme inner strength and most of all, faith in all that is good. He was a very humble man with the biggest heart and incomparable generosity.
Gaby loved watching his sports, no matter what was on tv, he recorded one while watching the other. It could be tennis, base ball, hockey, soccer, he followed them all through mom’s morning newspaper clippings. He also loved his backyard, whether looking after his vegetable garden, his rose garden or his many fruit trees. There are many squirrels out there in Mississauga that remember the numerous traps that dad laid out to prevent them from eating his crop. Whether it be a net over this cherry trees or picking his apricots before the animals would get to them first. A struggle and competition ensued many years between dad and his neighbourly animals.
A celebration of his life is held with the below particulars and burial will be held in the spring. Please feel free to add any special memories you have of Gaby in the comment section below.
God Bless you all and May he rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Gaby. I will always remember the days I spent with you and Leila.
you were great an sincere friends . I will always remember how we agreed on many things and how we loved the same food.
Your passing is a great loss . I will miss you Gaby
It is very sad when a loved one passes. Gaby was a very dear friend to us . We will always remember the beautiful times we spent together on the weekend outings and cruises . Gaby was always the kind, generous and perfect gentleman. He and Leila the “Bataleh “who was always by his side hold a very special place in our hearts. May God be with Leila and his family in those difficult times. May he rest in peace with our lord and may his memory be eternal. Alla Yirhamo . 🙏🏻
You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May Gabi’s gentle soul Rest In Peace and his memory be eternal.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Leila, Rula, Carole and Khalid.
May his gentle soul Rest In Peace and his memory be eternal.
Gaby, our dear one, we are sad and glad at the same time. Sad that we will miss your smile, your voice and that twinkle in your eyes. Glad that after all you endured willingly and without a complaint, our prayers were answered. The Lord took your hand and walked you home.
From the day your family came to Canada, we have shared a closeness and unbreakable bond. The laughs, the stories of your childhood with your cousins, the family barbecues, the sad times and the happy times, memories etched in the hearts of those you leave behind. Robert knew his Uncle Gaby would always have ice cream for him, and him alone, when we visited. If Elias was on the phone and telling a risqué joke, I knew it was Gaby on the other end and, when it was his turn to tell a joke, Gaby would make sure Leila was nowhere near to hear him!
Gaby, you were a gentle and humble man, generous and kind, a good man who never complained or said a harsh word about anyone, a man of faith and positivity.
May you find peace in our Lord’s kingdom where your loved ones welcomed you home. May you look down on your beloved Leila and family and bless them each and every way.
Go with God, and know we will never forget you.
Your life blessed a multitude.
With love and respect,
Elias, Janette and Robert Pio Hajjar
He shall always be remembered as a kind and generous man who gave and helped numerous people around him. He had a heart of gold and was more than a brother to all of us. May his soul find the peace it deserves near God.
Gaby shall be remembered for his life achievements which are many. But most important he shall be remembered for his kindness and generosity in kind and in spirit. He never shirked a duty and was always there for his close family and the larger circle of kin and friends. May he rest in peace that he deserves and that eluded him the last few years of his life
Gaby ya Gaby–The King @ Kingsbridge Garden Circle has passed on.
We were so lucky to see you on Sunday, a day prior to passing on. Upon arrival, you literary stunned all of us when you smiled & raised your right arm in salute. Then, laughed at my weird jokes. Before leaving, we said, “we love you.” And what did the King reply with?
I LOVE YOU.
Thank you, Gaby, for:
– Your love, wisdom, kindness, generosity & laughs
– Mentoring me, over 3 decades ago, on how to BBQ chicken. You said, “YOU’RE BURNING THE CHICKEN!!” I guess the smell of the burnt chicken got to you, hah? 😊
– Your advice on gardening
– Chats about the horrific experience of 1948, Haifa, Palestine, my family & uncles, including, Shakoura
– Chats about stocks, properties & investments
– And last but not least, for being the ultimate King of HARISI. Kont mssayyit ya m3alim 😊
With Love,
God Rest Your Soul.
