Born in Banjarmasin in 1921, Josephine lived through the Dutch state rule and subsequent Japanese occupation of Indonesia during World War II. As the 2nd eldest of 12 children, Josephine was accustomed to being a fierce protector of her loved ones, as she was to her daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren until the end. In her younger years, she was a teacher and a language professor, teaching English and Dutch languages, in which she was fluent. She was a devout Catholic, a devoted wife, and an independent woman.
