Dear Mrs. Cha, Lucia, Micheal and family,
Words cannot express how sad we are to hear of Mr.Cha’s passing. He was in every way, a strong, kind, wise and thoughtful man. He was my father’s best friend and always someone that my family admired.
When we were younger, I remembered Mr. Cha’s warmth and the kindness behind his smiles. He seemed to exude a genuine caring for others that I realize now, as an adult, is a rare quality and a true gift.
We were so happy to see Mr. and Mrs. Cha at our wedding in 2017. He was our guest of honor and his visit with us in Montreal was made possible because of Lucia’s deep love for her father and commitment to the friendship between our fathers. The Cha family’s attendance was the biggest gift they could have given us. I will never forget how happy my father was to spend time with his dear friend and to share that moment with him. I was not surprised to see that Mr. Cha still had that same warmth and kindness in his smile.
Whenever Mr. Cha and my father were together, either in person or talking over the phone, I remember thinking how happy my father was in that moment. I spoke with Lucia about this in Montreal, and she said the same thing. I am in awe of the friendship that they had. Somehow, God collided two souls, who shared a deep love for family and possessed similar courage and strength to build their lives in new countries. Mr. Cha was an amazing person. My father will miss his best friend. My family will miss his smile and his warmth.
We will keep your family in our prayers. We are forever grateful to God for blessing our lives with a friend and ah-juh-shee like Mr. Cha.
Love,
Peggy Han, Charles Thibault, Steve Han, Hyun-Ji Han and Man Kee Han
Dear Cha Family,
To piggyback on Peggy’s comments, we are so profoundly saddened to hear of Mr. Cha’s passing. We feel pain and are very sorry we cannot be there with you this week.
We will always remember how Mr. Cha’s warmth was perfectly matched to his bountiful laugh. Watching our fathers spend time together was like watching 2 teenage boys in the schoolyard; it was clear that they shared a deep bond that few friends get to experience.
We will think of him always and are grateful he was in our lives. We will visit as soon as it’s possible.
Always,
The Han Family
Dearest Lucia and Family,

To the Cha Family
We’re so sorry to hear about Mr Cha. Our family lived on Albert Street forever and we were at the variety store often.
Mr. Cha always had a smile for us and when we started bringing our kids in he had a smile & a foot candy for them. .
We moved to the country but every time we drive by the store we instantly start talking about how he always remembered us and how excited he was when we had kids.
He is part of what made our community a neighbourhood.
Lovely man and someone our family will always remember.
Initially I didn’t know anything about the store or Mr. Cha or his wife, but I remember moving to Markham, randomly entering their store at 12 years old, being smiled at and a little conversation followed. I soon understood that I was amongst kind people. Mr. and Mrs. Cha were nice people who were happy to see you, who always smiled and who acted like everything about you was interesting. They would both remember things about you and what you liked. Mr. Cha felt like an uncle figure. Many shop owners were nervous when teenagers entered so it was a pleasant experience to feel so welcome there and the free candy with a smile was such a pleasant and unexpected gesture.
There aren’t many like them, but someone similar lives near me.
Please allow me to share a little story.
There is a woman who works in a drive through near me and when she takes your order, even though she cannot see you, she always asks “What can I get for you, Honey?” When she takes your money she smiles and actually looks at you as she says “Thanks and you have a nice day, Honey. “ If there is no lineup, she asks how your day is going or comments on the weather etc.. I told her she makes my day and is spreading kindness. She said “Yes, and since I do that, I never feel like I just have a job. I feel like I am making the world a softer and better place one smile at a time.”
I mentioned her because she and Mr. and Mrs. Cha had the same philosophy and effect on me. They made the world a softer and better place, one person and one smile at a time.
It is amazing the impact people can have on others. Their kindness and big hearts are rare, memorable and inspirational.
RIP Mr Cha and thanks for shedding your light, for letting us know you cared and for setting a good example for those you encountered. Blessings to your family during this challenging time.
