Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss we announce the sudden passing of Margarette Lilia Chan on February 29, 2024, at home at the age of 67. Beloved mother of Marsha and Meghan, sister to Michele and Andy, and daughter to Jimmy and Jacky. She was a pillar of strength and love for her family and a dedicated professional who earned the respect of her entire community.

We are very saddened to hear of Margarette’s passing. She was a very kind and thoughtful person who was dedicated to both her family and her professional career. We shall miss her. May she have eternal rest and may light perpetual shine upon her, and may she rest in peace.

I have known Margarette for more than 20 years when I was on OAA Council and recently on the Board of Prodemnity. Just last week she was again helping me with the technology!
She was such a professional, always there to help.
We will miss her.
Marg was always there. A phone call away was help in any situation.
I cannot come to grips with not having her in my life.
We were associates and friends for thirty plus years I cannot recall a cross word.
I truly loved her.
Very sorry to have lost Margarette. I met her in 2017 and she was always a consummate professional, diligent in her efforts and a pleasure to work with. We need more people in the world like Margarette who come to us with happy hearts and don’t ask for a lot. I will miss her.
I have worked with Margarette for over 30 years. She was a consummate professional, easy to work with, and was well respected at work.
Margarette was the fulcrum of family and friends. We just celebrated her birthday and the New Year.

Our journey began 36 years ago when Margarette joined the fledgling mandatory program.
Her work ethic and acceptance of responsibility led to her performing a very key role.
Her quiet, calm and caring personality inspired a family style atmosphere.
Personally she became a close friend and we considered her part of our Canadian family.
Following retirement her visits to our home with Benedict Cadbury (akaBenny) were a delight. Not a week passed without some contact.
Her passing was devastating and our thoughts and prayers go out to Meghan, Marsha and family.
We loved her and are grateful to have memories to cherish.
Liz and I were deeply saddened to learn of Margarette’s passing. I will remember her as a valued colleague and friend for the last twenty years – someone who was always there to listen, test ideas, proof-read my writing and patiently assist me do battle with my computer.
Liz recalls having fun shopping and meals with Marg in London and one year even visiting the Harry Potter Studio! And both of us remember Marg’s love of Sticky Toffee Pudding!
I already miss Marg deeply. It will be difficult to come to to work knowing she will not be there.
Liz and I are sending our deepest condolences to Marg’s family. She was a wonderful person and friend who will be greatly missed.

Remembering the beautiful life Margarette lived, and the love she shared, my heart is heavy with grief. I had the privilege of working with her for 30 years. She was more than a great colleague to me, but a mentor and a dear friend to my life. We celebrated our birthdays together every year since 1989 and never missed one. I cannot express how brimming with gratitude for having had he in my life. I will immensely missed her.
She was always the light that shone bright in our workplace, and has been an inspiring colleague and an incredible asset to Pro-Demnity.
To Meghan and Marsha, your mother’s love and presence will always be cherished by us. My warm thoughts and sincere prayers are with you and your family.
My heart is shattered at the news of Margarette’s sudden passing and for the void that will be left with her gone.
She was both a mentor and esteemed colleague in my 20 years at Pro-Demnity, always conducting herself with the utmost professionalism and dedication to her profession. She conducted my interview when I was hired and was in the midst of planning a 20th anniversary celebration for myself and another colleague when she passed. It is difficult to imagine a Pro-Demnity without her there. She was the heart of the Company and we will not be the same without her.
Outside of the office, Margarette was kind, thoughtful and generous. A truly genuine, happy soul. She took an interest in the lives of those she worked with and was genuinely curious about our interests, children and families. She made coming to work feel like being part of a family. I had the pleasure of travelling with her to London on several occasions where she introduced me to the wonders of the Harrod’s Food Hall, Café Concerto and how to squeeze the maximum number of shopping hours into a tightly scheduled work itinerary!
Meghan and Marsha, you were her greatest joys. My heart breaks for your loss. My deepest sympathies to you both, and to the rest of your family.

We send our deepest condolences on Margarette’s passing. She was a constant sea of tranquility in a turbulent world. She always looked for solutions and delivered them with thoughtful efficiency and above all, with kindness. We will miss her greatly.

Margarette was an amazing mentor and an even better friend. She was always willing to help with a warm, loving kind soul. She took a genuine interest in those around her. Always meeting you with a special treat just for you, a true gem! I am thankful for the cherished memories, she will truly be missed.

I can’t believe that Margarette left us already. She was kind, passionate, generous, full of positive energy, contribute but never asked for paid back. Margarette always put her kids, family, and friends in priority but not herself. She always spoke softly, never heard any hard words from her mouth. You were the lights of the family, we missed you so much.
I met Margarette 8 years ago in my previous workplace. After leaving, we continued meeting each other and she became a very dear friend/mentor. Margarette was the kindest, loveliest and most generous person I have ever had the privilege of knowing. She always had a positive attitude, and was one of the hardest working people I have ever met. We shared many wonderful moments together, from delightful dinner dates to heartfelt conversations about life. These memories with Margarette are precious to me, and I will cherish them for as long as I live. I loved her and she will always have a special place in my heart. My deepest condolences to Meghan, Marsha and family.

There are very few people in this world that can convey their character to others…without saying a word…For me, Margarette was one of those people. She quietly demonstrated her moral excellence with extreme professionalism, an unmatched work ethic and an unconditional respect for those around her, in a world that desperately needs more of all of these virtues…

I did not know of Margarette’s passing. I sent her an email about 10 days and was surprised that she had not replied. That was so unlike her.
John Hackett replied to my email just 30 minutes ago and told me of Margarette’s passing. At this moment I am completely stunned and overwhelmed by this news.
I first worked with Margarette in 1996. Even now I can’t think of the OAA or Pro-Dem. without seeing her there.
I retired from the board ten years ago. But Margarette never stopped being a source of assistance and cheer. She was just a wonderful person.
