We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear mother, Marianne, who passed on August 24, 2024, at the age of 97. She is reunited with her husband Bernard after 33 years.  She is survived by her children Bernie Nick and Linda (Wayne) Hodgson.  She will be greatly missed by her grand-children Amanda and Mark (Sandra) and great-grand-children Sophia and Nico.

elevated T0OA4 Marianne was born near Graz, Austria on July 18, 1927.  Born the second of four children, she was fortunate to have an idyllic childhood being raised on the farm by her grandparents. She emigrated to Toronto in 1951 and was married to Bernard for 40 years. They established their business ventures of house flipping and real estate investments. During their early years, they travelled by car on many adventures.  Weekends were spent at the beach. In later years, our parents’ love of travel took them to many exciting destinations.

elevated T0OA4 Family and friends were entertained with gusto. There was always an event to be celebrated.  Her kitchen was the center of the home, and often had the aroma of sweet baked goods wafting through the air.  Marianne set the bar high as a Homemaker, Mother, and Grandmother.

elevated T0OA4 Upon being widowed, she moved to Newmarket to be closer to family. Becoming an Oma brought her the greatest joy.  It was then that she became known as “Oma” to everyone. Her garden was her pride.  A visit to her home would not be complete without a tour of her flowers.  Becoming a Florida Snowbird brought more adventure to the whole family.  Her circle of friends grew at the Senior Center, where she joined the Craft club and played Card Games.  She was stiff competition. Not much slowed Oma down. She was a very strong woman.

elevated T0OA4 Sunday family dinners were standard. Her home was filled with warmth and encouragement. She supported her family and was fiercely devoted to each of us but determined to ensure that we do our best. She loved her family thoroughly and was proud of each one of us.

elevated T0OA4 In her later years she suffered from Dementia. The family would like to thank her caregiver Marites Austin for her unending support.

elevated T0OA4 We would also like to extend our thanks to Newmarket Health Centre Rogers Home Unit where Marianne lived for the last 3 years. Marianne received outstanding care – the staff brought her such joy and gave her life enrichment in the final years. We could not have asked for better dedication and compassion than what was given during Marianne’s palliative care. She had a respectful and peaceful passing, and the family is extremely grateful.
