Dear Josie,
Hi Josie,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. I know she was unwell, but the death of one’s mother is very difficult and the absence of her presence is felt keenly.
Please know that your family is in my prayers.
I hope this poem gives you some measure of comfort knowing that your mother is having a reunion in heaven with all of her loved ones who have gone before her.
The Ship
I am standing on the seashore, a ship sails in the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says: “She is gone.”
Gone where?
Gone from my sight that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She is gone”
there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout:
“There she comes!”
And that is dying.

Hi Katharina,
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and comforting poem. I used some of the words in the eulogy for my mom and also the presiding priest at the funeral mass told the story of the Ship poem. It was a meaningful theme at my mom’s funeral as we have lost several family members and are comforted by the fact that they are reunited with my mom. Take care, Josie
Josie and Gino, Connie and I send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you both and your families on the passing of your much beloved mother. We know that the painful grief you feel now will, over time, be supplanted by the uncountable thousands of happy and precious memories that were created during your lifetimes with your sweet, loving mother.
Rita was very special to us, particularly to Connie, in part because Connie was able to enjoy your mother’s reminiscences from her youth back in Calabria. Those memories were often very similar to those of Connie’s mother and Connie herself when they lived in the Catanzaro area. I treasured your mother because she always had a warm, broad smile when I spoke my broken Italian to her and she always showered us with those heavenly Calabrese pastry treats she made when we came to visit. We will miss her dearly.
Hi Maury and Connie,
Thank you for your kind words and sharing your memories of our mom. She loved spending time with both of you. Thank you for your support.

Perora family , my deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved mother . May she Rip.

Hi Guy and Diana,
