Stephen is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Klara and their five children: Stephen, Claire (Robert), Peter (Patty), Elizabeth (Paul) and John (Lori). He will be deeply missed by his 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Stephen was a teacher, an artist and a consummate family man. He emigrated from Hungary in 1950 to make Canada his home, where he and Klara raised their five children. Stephen retired from his illustrious teaching career with the York Region District School Board as Superintendent of Education in 1986. Stephen then rekindled his love for art and created many beautiful sculptures in wood, bronze, and marble. His art is treasured by his family. Stephen loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren without waiver. Even in his last days, a video of a great grandchild would bring a smile to his face. Rest in Peace beloved Papa. We will truly miss you.

Sincere condolences to the extended Bacsalmasi Family especially to my dear friend Liz from high-school days and to Mrs. Klara Bacsalmasi who along with Stephen Sr. was always so welcoming and gracious with Liz’s boisterous friends 🙂
My Deepest Sympathy to my childhood friend Liz, Mrs. Bascalmasi and your family. I was attempting to reconnect with you Liz when I saw the death notice of your father. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I have many great memories of your dad.

Stephen was the most amazing man, a genius, a true visionary!
I had the honour of working with him as a Trustee, we fought to get a theatre in Unionville attached to the Secondary School for which Stephen had designed the Curriculum and a trusted Architect designed a building the Ministry refused to fund. We both requested the Mayor of Markham intervene and Tony Roman called the Councillors to ‘fund’ the entire project. Klara was always the perfect hostess and I often enjoyed her Hungarian cooking. YRBE eventually opened 4 such Arts Schools with Theatres and another for Elite Sports. Sam Chapman trusted Stephen implicitly!
