Mr. Zarlenga, as he was known to all of us kids on the street, was a great neighbour and friendly face. Both he and Mrs. Zarlenga always opened their doors and made everyone feel at home. (I have many fond memories of 146 Bestview Drive.)

Condolences
A lifeβs journey starts in a far away land into a loving and growing family. After the ravages of war, young men turn to a promised land for opportunity. With excitement, energy and the pain of separation, a new life begins across the ocean.
Thankfully the young men who arrive have each other. There are no refugee or immigration programs, workplace safety and health benefits; only the opportunity to work hard for bare wages.
All young men persevered in a new land, working long hours, struggling to learn another language, eating different food and no acknowledgement or appreciation for the ancient culture they were born into and left behind.
Like thousands of other young men, this is what the quiet young Vincenzo faced when arriving in Canada, as did his other family members and friends.
With dogged determination he continued day in and day out to support a young family that quickly grew to four children. For this quiet man his family is the centre of his universe. Dealing with day to day struggles as a newcomer to this land, moving ahead so his children will have a life filled with opportunity.
Vincenzo and Rina worked together with love and smiles to ensure their children were happy, safe and given the opportunity of a better life. Each child pursuing their own journey of dreams given to them from the path cleared by a young man with his own dreams.
Keep the happy memories alive and remember with gratitude the young man who left his family and land, created his own family, wanting only the best for his children.
This is how I remember Vincenzo.
Condolences to the Zarlenga Family, may the happy memories give you solace and comfort.
